My certificate/minor in photography brought me into the world of portraits where I fell in love with editorial photography. My favorite part of these sessions is witnessing the vulnerability of my subject as they allow a piece of themselves to be captured in time forever. During my time at UW-Madison, I also became proficient in a more casual style of portrait photography — professional headshots. After college, I accepted a sessional position as a picture day photographer.
Studio Photography — My senior year photography project at UW-Madison focused on the power of accepting your own insecurities. Some of my favorite volunteers had incredible stories such as becoming a body positivity model and or emboldening their larger-than-life personality despite their petite frame.
Portrait — There’s nothing more fun than taking your subject to a beautiful location, throwing some props on the ground and having them play around with poses. Watching them open up in front of you and the camera is magical, and it’s really special to see that outer shell peel off.
Editorial — During my time working on a variety of magazine publications, I really came to enjoy the editorial style of photography. These photos covered stories ranging from fashion to radio broadcasts, and psychology to the growth of a city. The exciting part of this form of photography is the challenge of taking something conceptual and giving it a visual.
Professional Headshots — I have done professional headshots as a volunteer, as a freelancer and as a paid professional. I’ve personally preferred the use of outdoor light and backdrops as they create a more welcoming visual. The most rewarding part of this style is getting that Duchenne smile, the genuine glimmer in their eyes.
Other — I’m not really sure what to categorize this style as it’s not quite candid but not quite portrait either. Possibly just humans being humans, the moment when someone realizes there’s a camera on them and they give you that big cheesy grin — I live for these photos.
